Bangkok — Thailand has had over a month without a COVID-19 case domestically. This is evident in the country’s position in the Global COVID-19 Index (GCI). Thailand is ranked as the best country to have recovered from COVID-19 in Asia, and second globally in the same index in recovery from the pandemic according to PEMADU Associates, in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Innovations of Malaysia (MOSTI) and the Sunway Group.
Furthermore, the quality of Thailand’s healthcare services was ranked sixth in the world in 2019. Both Thais and foreigners are confident in Thailand’s efficient healthcare system. There is no doubt that international students at University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) are among many foreigners who feel safe to reside in Thailand during the crisis caused by COVID-19.
Preventive measures of COVID-19 such as maintaining a safe distance in public have been applied nationwide and have become the “new normal” for Thai people. UTCC, the leading university in trade and services in ASEAN, has also taken necessary safeguard measures in response to the spread of the virus since the beginning of the crisis. UTCC has moved all classes online since mid-March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began to get worse in Thailand.
Assistant Professor Thanavath Phonvichai, PhD, President of UTCC, said that “New measures are taken at UTCC to comply with the government’s guideline during to the COVID-19 situation. Although, the university was closed earlier, we always keep our area clean and hygienic. And in preparation for the return of our students from August 10, more hand sanitizer stations have been installed campus-wide. Seating arrangement for classrooms will allow students to maintain physical distance while still enjoy their learning experiences at the university.”
However, with international travel restrictions, UTCC has prepared for offering hybrid classes for international programs to cater students who may be unable to attend classes at the university, which most of them are new students from China and other Asian countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam. There are 2 intakes this semester: August 10 and October 5.
“Students in our international programs will be able to attend classes as usual or online. The university has invested in new technology that enables students to get the same learning experience wherever they are. Classroom activities will be streamed live so that our international students, both UTCC and exchange students, can virtually study alongside their classmates in Thailand,” said the President of UTCC.
UTCC students have been equipped with devices and skills to study remotely as the university has been applying technology in education for several years. The curriculum has been transformed, faculty have been trained, infrastructure has been developed. Every new academic year, the university provides each new student with an iPad as a learning device. More than 700 lessons have been uploaded onto iTunes U, making UTCC one of the higher education institutions where its students regularly access lessons on iTunes U. The effort in transforming education continues to grow as UTCC has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School 2015 – 2020.
